The Dandiest of Lions

These microphotos show one seed "parachute" from a dandelion, or blow flower. I've shot dandelions like this before while in Canada, here. Though the previous dandelion appears to be a bit different from this one.

Note in the last photo of this series how the seeds attach to the center of the parachute bell by way of a long thin arm, whereas the other dandelion's seeds seem to extend a stylish fin from their parachutes to their flower center.

Yet Another Weird Seed Pod Thing

This little deal fell off of a local tree, it's soft and fuzzy and seems to have tiny seeds in it. It's about 2cm long and of course looks strange when we look up close!

Bell Pepper Seeds

Yet another set of photos that turned out better than I thought they would. I was originally just shooting the cut open pepper. And just out of curiosity, I got my macro lens out and started shooting the seeds. They turned out to be beautiful and strange and wonderfully textured.

Grass Seed Stalk

We've looked at grass seed stalks before when they were fresh picked and green. Here is the same thing, dried and after dropping all the seeds. The stalk has changed color to a deep ruby, and the little caps that had secured the seeds to the stalk are all that's left. Very cool, I didn't know what to expect, and it's fascinating!

Bet you can't guess!

Can you guess what this is? I had no idea it would be so beautiful close up, and intriguing. The details like the curving and twisting stalks that make it appear to be swimming through moving water, and the stripes on these seed casings... Details I just didn't expect.

Actually, I didn't even take these intending to publish them. These were part of a series of test shots taken while I was fooling around with the camera and lenses. It was later that I realized I had something here.

You can see this item at the bottom of this post, with a penny. It's just a very normal stalk of grass, the kind that gets all seedy at the top when you forget to mow the lawn for a while.

I'll get back to the other assorted items--like fasteners--soon enough, but I've got a lot of nature shots to crank through from our recent lake vacation. Send me an idea for something you'd like to see big, if you care to break this cycle of nature photos!

The Rest of the Weird Plant Things That Violet and I Found

Alright, here's the rest of the weird stuff V and I found at the park. A strange pit-like thing covered in spines, some brown, some green. It looked like an alien egg or something.

I guess I'm too lazy to figure out what these things are. A google might turn up an answer. Or maybe not.

We found a really strange thing at the beach the other day. Totally strange and alien. I don't have a photo of it, but we think it's a seed pod or something.

And that's what these things appear to be too.
Here's the other seed pod thing. Again, with the size comparison on a penny, I think it's helpful!

Weird Seedy Flowery Things

Violet and I made it our mission today to find tiny things at the park that we could shoot in macro. So we searched through rocks and leaves and flowers, and found the strange thing above.

It appears to be a strange seed case or flower bud or something. We like that it is fuzzy. It's actually quite small, which made examining it at the park a little difficult. But we were pretty sure it would be cool when we photographed it. When magnified, it looks like a ball with bed head.

I'm going to try to include a small reference image for my macro shots, as you can see to the left. This will help you to get a better idea of the size of the things we are looking at close up.

Below is another photo of the weird bed head ball.
Then, we found something that looked like the bed head ball, cracked open and blooming. I don't know if it actually is a next-stage bed head ball or what, but that's what our imagination has decided. You can see this below and judge for yourself! Here's the reference image of the weird bed head ball flower, to the left.

What I wouldn't give for a good celery seed right about now

Celery seeds, surprisingly wrinkly. More like fluting or ridges that encircle them. I think they kind of look like pistachios.

These guys are very very small, so I am pleased with the amount of detail I've been able to capture with this photo. Go ahead, take a look at the celery seeds in your spice collection. Bet you'd never guess what they look like. Well, now you know. So stop squinting at you celery seeds, weirdo.

Open Sesame, Toasty and Delicious

Toasted sesame seeds, looking like crusty eggplant buoys, floating on a luminous blue sea. Or perhaps tropical aquatic plants that have floated up from the reef and will wash up on the beach.

Coriander Seed Balloon Ascension

I love how this looks like a balloon ascension, from below, just after the children have released their balloons to the sky.

These coriander seeds were so much more beautiful than I had expected them to be. With the gentle wavy fluting around each seed, their detail is delicate and subtle.

I think the alterations I made to my lighting setup for this shot helped to really make this photo stand out too. In this photo, and some others I will post soon, I have a light source above and below the subject, and catch a bounce off some side reflectors as well. The amount and quality of light in a photo tends to determine its success, often much more than framing, composition, color, focus, etc.

In this case, it definitely worked out well, I think.
